This Privacy Policy explains what information EscapeMaker ("the Platform", "we", "us") collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. EscapeMaker is operated by Selfdefiant Studios. By creating an account or using the Platform, you consent to the practices described here. We collect only what we need to run the service, and we do not sell your personal information.
We collect the following:
We do not require, and ask you not to submit, sensitive personal information (such as government IDs, health data, or financial account numbers) in your account profile or game content.
We use the information we collect to:
We do not use your content to train third-party advertising profiles. The Platform displays no third-party advertising to anyone (creators, players, or classroom students) on any tier.
EscapeMaker does not use your private projects, uploaded assets, unpublished games, or student classroom work to train artificial-intelligence or machine-learning models, and we do not sell or provide that content to third parties for AI training.
EscapeMaker is a creation tool used by teachers and creators. Creating an account requires you to be at least 13 years of age.
Public play. Anyone can play games published to the EscapeMaker Portal without creating an account. For anonymous public play, we do not ask players to provide names, email addresses, or account information. We collect aggregate play statistics, such as completion and interaction counts, and may process standard technical data, such as server logs, only as needed for security, reliability, abuse prevention, and basic service operation.
Classrooms. EscapeMaker offers classroom features for teachers. A teacher sets up student logins for their class; students do not register themselves. Each student login uses a class code and a nickname chosen by the teacher, not the student's real name. We do not collect or store a student's real name, email address, phone number, birthday, or other contact information, and we do not ask students for any of it.
Within a classroom, students can both play and build their own escape games. A student's games, work, and progress are saved to their classroom login so they can keep working, and are visible only to the teacher who set up that class; they are not shown to other students, not published, and never sold or shared for advertising. A teacher can remove a student or delete a classroom, which deletes that login and its associated work.
Children under 13. EscapeMaker does not require students to provide real names, email addresses, phone numbers, birthdays, or contact information; classroom logins use a class code and a teacher-chosen nickname. We may process limited technical data, classroom login data, and student-created work only as needed to provide, secure, and operate the classroom features. Where a school or teacher uses classrooms with students under 13, the teacher and school remain responsible for permissions under COPPA (typically relying on the school-consent exception) and for compliance with FERPA and their own institutional policies. If you believe identifying information about a child has been provided to us improperly, contact us and we will delete it.
Data Processing Agreements. EscapeMaker is designed to minimize student data collection. Some schools and districts may require a Data Processing Agreement under their own policies or applicable law. For districts whose policy requires one, a DPA is available on request as part of the District tier.
We use cookies that are necessary for the Platform to function, primarily to keep you signed in and to keep your session secure. We do not use third-party advertising or cross-site tracking cookies on the creator platform. You can clear or block cookies in your browser, but doing so may prevent you from staying logged in.
Paid subscriptions are processed by Stripe, a third-party payment processor. When you subscribe, your card details are entered directly with Stripe and are handled under Stripe's own privacy and security practices. We do not receive or store your full card number. We retain only limited billing records (such as your subscription tier, status, and a processor reference) needed to manage your account and comply with our records obligations.
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only in these limited cases:
We keep your account information and content for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we remove your personal information and unpublished content within a reasonable period, except where we must retain limited records for legal, security, or billing purposes. Deleted information may remain for a limited time in backups, logs, caches, or archived copies before being removed through our normal retention processes, unless we need to retain it longer for legal, security, billing, or abuse-prevention reasons. Published games may be removed from the Portal upon account deletion. Deleting your account or removing a game from the Portal does not automatically remove copies you previously exported, shared, embedded, downloaded, or distributed outside the Platform.
You can review and update your account information at any time from your account settings. You may request a copy of your personal information or ask us to delete your account and associated personal data by contacting us. We will respond within a reasonable time. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under applicable privacy laws; we honor valid requests to access, correct, or delete personal information.
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information. Data is transmitted over encrypted (HTTPS) connections, account passwords are stored only in hashed form by our authentication system, and account data and content are kept on access-controlled servers located in the United States. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. You are responsible for keeping your password confidential and for activity that occurs under your account.
EscapeMaker is operated from the United States, and your information is processed and stored there. If you access the Platform from outside the United States, you understand that your information will be transferred to and handled in the United States, where data protection laws may differ from those in your location.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date below and, where appropriate, provide additional notice. Your continued use of the Platform after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
